What’s the difference between junk removal and dumpster rental?
Junk removal is a service: a crew arrives at a scheduled time, loads everything you point at into their truck, and hauls it away — usually same day, usually in under an hour. You do no lifting. Dumpster rental is a container: we drop a roll-off in your driveway, you fill it over hours or days at your own pace, and we come back to take it away. You do the loading; you get the time.
Both end with your stuff gone. The choice comes down to how much, how fast, and how much you want to lift.
Which is cheaper in Asheville: junk removal or a dumpster?
Per cubic yard, a dumpster is almost always cheaper. Junk removal in Asheville averages about $75 to $100 per cubic yard of loaded volume, with minimum service fees around $150 to $200. A 12-yard dumpster from us costs about $345 for a full week including delivery, pickup, and one ton — that works out to roughly $29 per cubic yard if you fill it.
The catch: junk removal includes labor. If you do not want to lift a couch up two flights of stairs, you are paying the crew to do that. Dumpster rental does not include labor. You load. That price advantage disappears fast if you have to pay someone hourly to fill the dumpster for you.
Quick math: a half-full dumpster you loaded yourself usually beats a junk-removal crew on price. A quarter-full dumpster you paid someone to load usually does not.
When should I pick junk removal?
Junk removal is the right call when:
- You have a few specific items — a sofa, a fridge, a hot tub, a treadmill — and you want them gone today.
- You physically cannot do the loading (mobility, post-surgery, busy week, you just don’t want to).
- The stuff is heavy or awkward — pianos, safes, riding mowers, an old shed worth of metal.
- The total volume is under a truckload (roughly 4 to 8 cubic yards — about a third of a 12-yard dumpster).
- You need the curb clear before an event or a showing tomorrow.
It’s also the cleanest option for estate cleanouts where someone else needs the place sorted yesterday and is not going to load anything themselves.
When should I rent a dumpster?
Dumpster rental wins when:
- The project takes more than one day. Renovations, garage purges, multi-room cleanouts — you load over time as you uncover stuff.
- You’re generating debris as you work. Demo a bathroom, frame a deck, tear off a roof — you need somewhere to throw things as you go.
- The volume is more than half a truckload. Once you cross into 8-10+ cubic yards, the per-yard math swings hard toward a dumpster.
- You have flexibility on timing. A 7-day rental lets you load at 7 AM Saturday or 9 PM Tuesday — whenever you have the energy.
- You want a fixed price regardless of how full you actually fill it.

What about price gotchas?
Junk removal pricing in Asheville varies widely. Some companies quote by volume after they see the load, which leaves you negotiating in your driveway. Others add fuel surcharges, stair fees, and dump fees on top of the base price. Ask for a flat-rate quote before they show up.
Dumpster rentals can have hidden costs too — mostly overweight fees if you exceed the included tonnage with heavy debris like concrete, dirt, or roofing. Our quotes show the included weight (one ton on standard rentals) and the per-ton overage rate up front so you can decide. No surprises.
What if I have a mix? Like a remodel AND old furniture?
For most multi-day projects, the dumpster wins even with mixed debris. Rent a 15 or 20 yard, throw everything in as you go — remodel debris, that old recliner, the broken washing machine. One delivery, one pickup, one price. The exception: if you have one heavy specialty item (an old upright piano, a wall-mounted safe) that you genuinely cannot move, hire junk removal for that single item and rent a dumpster for the rest of the project.
Frequently asked questions
Can I rent a dumpster for just one day in Asheville?
Yes — we offer same-day load-and-go on smaller sizes if your project is fast. The price is the same as a standard rental, but you free up your driveway sooner.
Is junk removal faster than a dumpster?
For a single load, yes. The crew is in and out in under two hours. A dumpster gives you days but requires you to do the loading on your schedule.
What’s included in a dumpster rental from All In?
Delivery, pickup, up to seven days, and one ton of debris (2,000 lbs). Heavy projects with concrete or roofing may go over a ton — we tell you the per-ton rate up front.
Do you offer junk removal too?
We are roll-off dumpster specialists. For pure junk removal, we can refer you to local crews we trust. But for anything over a half-truckload, a dumpster from us almost always costs less.
What can’t go in a dumpster?
Hazardous chemicals, liquid paint, tires, asbestos, propane tanks, refrigerators with refrigerant, and medical waste. Most household and construction debris is fine. See our main dumpster rental page for the full list.
Not sure which one you need?
Call (828) 776-5517 and describe your project. We’ll give you a straight recommendation — even if that means pointing you to a junk removal crew. We are not going to talk you into renting a dumpster you don’t need.
