A roof replacement is one of those projects that’s easy to underestimate. From the ground, the roof looks like a single surface. Once the tear-off begins, you discover just how much material is up there. Layers of asphalt shingles, underlayment, drip edge, flashing, sometimes wood shake under modern shingles, sometimes a second or third roof installed on top of the first. The debris piles up fast, it’s heavy, and managing it efficiently is what separates a smooth roofing project from a frustrating one.

At All-In Dumpster Rentals, we work with roofing contractors and homeowners across Western North Carolina to make the cleanup side of these projects as straightforward as the installation itself. Asheville’s mountain weather, our older housing stock, and the prevalence of multi-layer roofs in the region all add wrinkles that a good waste plan can iron out. Here’s what you need to know.

How Much Material Comes Off a Typical Asheville Roof

The volume of debris from a roof tear-off depends on a few factors: the square footage of the roof, the number of layers being removed, the type of shingle, and whether any structural decking needs to be replaced. As a rough rule of thumb, a 2,000-square-foot single-layer asphalt shingle roof generates around three to four tons of debris.

That weight matters because dumpsters are priced based on tonnage as well as volume. Asphalt shingles are dense, and a dumpster full of shingles can hit its weight limit long before it looks full to the eye. If you’ve got a multi-layer roof, expect the weight to multiply accordingly.

Sizing Your Dumpster for Roofing Work

For most residential roofing projects, our 13-yard or 15-yard dumpsters are the right fit. The exact choice depends on the size of the home and the number of layers being removed.

10-yard dumpster: Small residential roof tear-offs, typically single-layer, on homes around 1,200 to 1,500 square feet. Also a good fit for partial reroof projects.

13-yard dumpster: Most popular for standard residential roof tear-offs on average-sized Asheville homes. Single-layer or modest multi-layer.

15-yard dumpster: Larger homes, multi-layer roofs, or projects where decking is also being replaced and disposed.

For commercial projects or unusually large residential roofs, we may recommend multiple containers or scheduled swaps mid-project. Talk with us when you book and we can plan it out.

Understanding the Weight Allowance

Our dumpsters come with a one-ton weight allowance included in the base rental price. That’s plenty for most projects, but roofing is one of the few categories where weight can become a real factor. Asphalt shingles average around 250 pounds per square (one square equals 100 square feet of roof), so a 20-square roof generates around 5,000 pounds of shingle waste alone.

If your project is likely to exceed the included weight, talk with us in advance. We can give you accurate pricing up front so there are no surprises at pickup. Overage fees are easier to plan for than to react to.

What We Can and Cannot Take

The vast majority of roofing tear-off material is welcome in our dumpsters, including:

  • Asphalt shingles (three-tab and architectural)
  • Wood shake and shingle
  • Underlayment and felt
  • Drip edge and flashing (metal)
  • Roof decking and sheathing
  • Insulation
  • Nails and roofing staples
  • Trim and fascia removed during the project

Materials we cannot accept in standard roofing dumpsters include asbestos-containing materials (which require specialized disposal), large quantities of concrete or stone, and any hazardous chemicals. If you suspect your older Asheville home may have asbestos roofing or insulation, get it tested before tear-off begins. Asbestos disposal requires a separate, regulated process.

Placement Considerations for Roofing Projects

Roofing crews work fast. A typical residential tear-off and reroof happens in one to three days, with the bulk of debris coming down on day one. That means the dumpster needs to be in place before the first shingle hits the ground.

The ideal placement is close enough to the work area that crews can toss debris directly into the container, but not so close that the truck or dumpster damages landscaping or driveways. Tarps under the dumpster and along the roof edge are standard practice for protecting your property.

Our hook-lift trucks help here because we can place dumpsters closer to the work than traditional roll-off trucks, even on properties with steep grades or tight access. For Asheville’s hillside homes, that placement flexibility often makes a real difference in how quickly the project moves.

Protecting Your Property During Tear-Off

A good roofing crew takes care to minimize damage to your property, but some preparation on your end helps. Move vehicles out of the immediate area. Cover or move outdoor furniture, planters, and grills. Let pets stay indoors during the workday. Walk the perimeter at the end of each day to look for stray nails or debris that missed the catch tarp.

The dumpster itself shouldn’t damage your driveway in normal use, but if you’ve got a recently sealcoated or freshly poured surface, mention it when you book. We can usually accommodate special placement requests or recommend protective measures.

Coordinating With Your Roofer

Most professional roofing companies in Asheville handle dumpster coordination themselves, but practices vary. Some roll the rental cost into their bid and book everything for you. Others expect the homeowner to handle the dumpster while they focus on labor and materials. Both approaches work; you just want to confirm which one applies before the project starts.

If you’re a contractor reading this, building a relationship with a reliable dumpster company simplifies your workflow. We work with crews across the region and can usually accommodate same-week scheduling, multiple deliveries for larger jobs, and quick swaps when a container fills mid-project.

Why Roofing Debris Doesn’t Belong in Your Regular Trash

Some homeowners ask whether smaller roofing projects could just go in the regular curbside trash. The answer is no, and not just because of volume. Asphalt shingles are too heavy for residential trash service in most municipalities, and even if they could fit, the weight regulations would likely be exceeded immediately.

For anything more than a single repair patch, a dumpster is the right move. The convenience and cost-effectiveness easily justify the rental.

Storm Damage and Insurance Claims

Western North Carolina sees its share of severe weather, from heavy snow loads to hailstorms to the kind of major events like Hurricane Helene that produce widespread roof damage. If your roof replacement is the result of storm damage and you’re working with an insurance claim, keep documentation throughout the process.

That includes photos of the damaged roof before tear-off, photos of the debris being removed, and your dumpster rental receipt. These records support your claim and can help with the back-and-forth that often comes with adjusters. If you need quick service for storm-related work, we can usually deliver same-week and often faster.

Seasonal Timing for Roof Projects

In Western North Carolina, the seasons shape roofing schedules in ways that affect dumpster planning too. Spring and fall are the busy seasons, with mild weather and reasonable temperatures making for ideal tear-off conditions. Summer roofing happens too, but the heat slows crews and dries out shingles faster. Winter roofing is doable on the right days, but cold weather brittleness, snow days, and ice on roof surfaces all complicate the work.

If you’re planning a project, the spring and fall windows are usually easier to schedule and book. Demand on dumpster companies climbs during those seasons, so booking ahead helps lock in your delivery date. For emergency roof work after a storm, we try to accommodate same-week scheduling whenever possible, but planning ahead always gives you more flexibility.

Booking Your Roofing Dumpster

To book your delivery, call or text us at (828) 776-5517 or use the online booking form on our website. We’ll talk through the project, your timeline, and your property, and we’ll recommend the size that fits.

Our hours stretch from 6:30 am to 7:00 pm, seven days a week. That schedule matters for roofing work because crews often start at first light and weekend work is common. We’re available when you need us.
