Why landscaping crews use roll-off dumpsters instead of trailers
The math turns fast once you start adding up time. A landscaping crew with three trailer-loads of bush debris per day is spending 90 minutes minimum just driving to the disposal facility — each load. That’s 4.5 hours of crew time at, say, $25/hr per worker for two guys = $112/day in labor just for hauling. Add fuel, wear on the truck and trailer, dump fees, and time the crew isn’t billing the client.
A 15 yard roll-off holds about 4-5 trailer-loads of bushes. Drop it onsite at 7 AM, fill it through the day, we pick up the next morning. Crew stays on the job, billing the client. The dumpster pays for itself if it saves you even one trailer-trip per day.
How we work with landscaping crews
Same-day delivery for active job sites
Most of our crew customers call between 6 and 9 AM with their day’s needs. If we have a truck routed near you, we can drop a roll-off by noon. Tell us where the job is and what size you need; we’ll tell you if we can hit it today.
Multi-jobsite scheduling
Working three properties this week? Tell us the order and we’ll sequence drops to match. Crews working a Wednesday-Thursday property in Candler and a Friday-Saturday property in Hendersonville can have one dumpster moved between sites with a Friday morning swap.
Fast container swaps
Filled it up midday and need it gone? If our route allows, we can swap in a fresh container the same afternoon. Standard turnaround is next morning. Either way, your crew doesn’t lose a day waiting for capacity.
Net-30 billing for established accounts
After your first month of consistent work, we’ll set you up on net-30 invoicing. Bill at month-end, pay by check or ACH. No per-delivery payment friction.
Crew-friendly drop placement
We work with your foreman on placement. Side yard, back driveway, the road shoulder if the property doesn’t have access — we’ll get the container as close to the work as possible.
What sizes work best for landscaping crews?
- 10 yard: Single-day jobs, smaller properties. Best for crews who want lower per-job dumpster cost on tight jobs.
- 15 yard: The crew favorite. Holds a full day’s bush-removal output for a 3-person crew on a moderate property.
- 20 yard: Two-day projects, full-acre clearing, or commercial landscape jobs.
- 30 yard: Multi-day commercial clearing, full-property tear-out and replant.
Most crews settle into a regular rotation of 15-yarders and add 20s for bigger jobs. Need help sizing for a specific job? Call us, describe the property, we’ll recommend.
What can crews put in the dumpster?
Bush debris, branches, root balls, leaves, grass clippings, soil from bush extraction, and most green waste. Mixed loads (some hardscape debris alongside the green) are fine within reason. Things that need to be separated:
- Treated lumber from removed landscape borders — separate disposal stream.
- Painted or stained fencing material — different facility.
- Herbicide-treated debris within 48 hours of application.
- Stumps over 12 inches in diameter — some facilities won’t take them mixed with general yard waste.
If you’re not sure about a load, send the foreman a photo and we’ll tell you straight up.
How do crews maximize each rental?
Best practices from crews we’ve worked with for years:
- Cut long branches in half. Stretching a 12-foot branch across the dumpster wastes 60% of the volume. Quick chainsaw pass saves capacity.
- Shake root balls before loading. Most of the weight is soil. Two minutes of shaking per root ball can keep you under the tonnage limit.
- Stack horizontal, not vertical. Bushes thrown trunk-up fill twice the volume of bushes stacked flat.
- Load heavy at the bottom. Root balls and stumps at the floor of the dumpster keeps the load stable on pickup.
- Tarp before rain. Open-top dumpsters collect water, which adds tonnage. Tarp the top if heavy rain is expected.
What does a crew account cost?
Same rates as anyone else — we don’t markup for accounts. What you get is access:
- 10 yard: ~$295/rental
- 15 yard: ~$395/rental
- 20 yard: ~$475/rental
- 30 yard: ~$545/rental
All include delivery, pickup, up to 7 days, and one ton of debris. Crew accounts get net-30 billing terms after first month and route priority for same-day requests. Full pricing on our main service page.
Frequently asked questions
Can we swap a full dumpster for an empty one same day?
Sometimes yes, depending on our routing that day. Worst case is next-morning swap, which is still faster than a trailer trip to the dump.
Do you bill per delivery or monthly?
Per delivery is the default. After your first month of consistent activity, we move you to monthly net-30 billing.
What if our crew goes over the one-ton allowance?
Overage runs $65-$85 per ton depending on disposal facility. Most bush-only loads stay under one ton unless they’re heavy with root balls or stumps.
Can we have the dumpster sit on a client’s lawn?
Possible, but lawns dent under a loaded roll-off. Driveway or hardscape is better. We’ll advise based on the property.
Do you serve crews outside the Asheville metro?
Yes — Buncombe, Henderson, Haywood, Madison counties all routinely. Outside those, ask — we go further than the map for established crews.
